Wooden

Beauty and Harmony looked out through the window.

"It's a wonderful day to be alive," said Beauty, revelling at the colours of the day and the motion of the clouds and the trees as the wind pulled them all about.

"That's so true," Harmony agreed. "And I particularly love the way that each single element is in balance and they all interact together. It makes me want to go out out there and roll in the grass and gallop across the fields and rub my side along every thorny hedge I can find. There are such adventures we could be having, the two of us and that world out there." His voice faltered and then he grew silent, the only sound being the plish of a singular tear hitting the window-sill.

Beauty sighed. "If only we weren't made of wood," she said.

  1. Poignant; I liked the message - the restrictions we put on ourselves and those which are forced upon us by others. At least that's what I got from it :-)

    1. It's a deceptively simple piece which has hidden meanings. I'm very pleased with it although, since it came so easily to me, it frustrates me that I can't reliably write pieces that are so charming and poignant, however hard I try!

    2. I like that you mix it up a little - these pieces are that much more poignant and charming because they come to you sporadically :-)

    3. This was a gift from above - or from the muse. Sometimes the words are just queueing up waiting to be written.

    4. I get that completely. I'm trying to finish a novel that is due to be released at the end of July, am half-way through another, and suddenly I've been bombarded with a whole new set of imaginary friends who've taken me in a different direction. It can make life difficult! It's all a gift though, so I guess I should be grateful :-)

    5. If only we didn't need to sleep. Personally, I think cloning's the answer!

    6. I think you're onto something, though I'm sure there are those who would shudder at the thought of several copies of me in existence! If they think I'm odd now, imagine how they'd feel about a diluted version...sorry my mind went to Multiplicity - a surprisingly entertaining film :-)

    7. Michael Keaton plays a good part - or parts - in that. Or maybe a replicator device instead? Like a teleporter without the time-shift issues.

    8. Or one of the sleep chambers from the film Daredevil, where twenty minutes of sleep equates to a whole night. Sign me up for one of those!

    1. Thank you, Ginger. It was such a pleasing piece to write. And sweet without being cloying.
